Testimonials from participants of Programs taught by John Longhill and the Blue River Ranch
I began volunteering at the Ranch because my daughter, (who was having extensive emotional issues), has a deep passion for horses. A passion we in no way could afford. I took her to the ranch because of her love for horses (setting aside my absolute terror of the beautiful creatures). John, Longhill and countless other wonderful people helped me overcome my fear of these beautiful animals and most importantly helping my daughter believe in herself. She's growing into a beautiful, confident young lady in addition to an experienced horse handler because of all the help and love they've given her. The Ranch is our happy place and when times get tough, (and there have been tough times), their love and support has helped us through those situations. They are strong, loving, intelligent and positive people and the ranch is heaven on earth! Janice Pappas
My dream as a child was to own a horse, but in those days it never occurred to me that I might find a place like the Blue River Ranch, where I can help to care for many horses. My first favorite horse book was Black Beauty, which taught me how cruel some people can be, but how love and kindness can win over evil. As an adult I have learned that people--both adults and children--suffer for many reasons, but the inspiration provided by the Blue River Ranch programs can help them overcome their challenges and change their lives for the better. I have gained a new purpose in supporting this organization's mission in many ways. There is joy and a feeling of accomplishment that comes from helping feed and train the rescued horses so they can be used in the life-changing programs offered to people. I have also found ways to support the mission through marketing, fundraising and automating the volunteer tracking to assist in grant applications. I am enjoying a whole new group of friends who are caring and hard working and wonderful to work with. Lastly I have learned so much, and learning keeps you young! It is truly a privilege to spend my time and energy on this cause! Nancy Spears
I started volunteering with John Longhill’s organization this past summer, both at the animal rescue center and their supporting resale shop, Horse Cents, in nearby Silverthorne. I enjoyed both so much, I went almost daily to help out one or the other. This charity is touching the lives of so many - both human and animals - in so many ways. John and Rose are delightful and the staff and other, more seasoned volunteers could not be more supportive and encouraging to those who are just learning the ropes. Although we do not live permanently in Colorado, I cannot wait to return to assist them again. The Blue River Ranch gets five stars from me! Pam Dominique
Volunteering at Blue River Ranch opened up a life perspective that was elusive to me. The amazing connection between the rescued horses and us humans is something I wish I'd been able to experience years ago. I've learned to "think like a horse" and have come to understand what an enormous amount of volunteer time has to be in place to keep up with John's commitment to the community. To see firsthand what an impact the horses have on individuals who benefit from the ranch leaves me with the feeling that there is good in this world. S.G.
What a wonderful place to be able to bring your kids to volunteer, and show them what it means to help an animal, and themselves, and teaches them leadership skills at the same time. The Ranch also provided us with training before we were able to volunteer with the animals. It can be a wonderful family volunteer experience, that my children enjoy going to. Not to mention, the beautiful surroundings!! T.H
When a person finds the reason GOD created them and embraces it fully, you have something of rare and powerful beauty. The Longhills were designed to rescue these majestic beauties. I'm so thankful for people like them, and hope their important work continues for all time. True inspiration! G.G
In trying to decide where to donate, I look for many things. One that is most important is the selflessness of the people involved. They do what they can with what they have to make something work. The Ranch takes an idea, makes it work and then they continue to make it better. Not only does this benefit the animals and the people that are there for the programs but for the volunteers as well. It is a place where people of all ages can learn how to be a volunteer. My grand kids love it and will become good philanthropists as a result. Betsy Davison
We engaged John Longhill to conduct a leadership day for our Talent Management team on a beautiful summer day in the Rockies. The soul of the property, the animals, and the staff met us upon arrival and stayed with us throughout the day. We have taken lessons from that day and incorporated them into our Programs that we offer to our leadership teams across the company. We thank this organization for everything they do for the animals, our community, and the environment. Gretchen Reid
I have been volunteering at The Ranch for over two years now and the feeling I get when I am out there is just amazing. The ranch is beautiful with all these wonderful animals who teach me every day to be a better person. Learning leadership skills to all is very rewarding and watching young kids handling a large horse with confidence is just an incredible thing to watch. I just can't imagine my life without this experience. I love being there! Vicki Rue-Knowlton
The Ranch has made a huge difference in my life. The leadership makes every volunteer feel appreciated for every thing they do. I started volunteering with my 8 year old son to expose him to some of the work The Ranch does with kids and horses. I found we both got a lot more out of our experience than I ever expected. It has been a true blessing. The volunteer program training is amazing, teaching leadership and communication skills that we can use in our lives every day. This is an amazing place with still more potential. Heather Day
This is the most amazing organization I have volunteered for. They teach leadership skills to adults and children through hands on work with rescued horses and small animals. I tell everyone I can to take time to be apart of this wonderful organization. Lindsay Brown
I have worked for nonprofits most of my career. I am now a volunteer at The Ranch and it is truly an outstanding organization. I am so impressed by the individual love and care each animal receives.
Volunteers are taught to provide good care as well as how to respect and train the animals. It is an opportunity to learn about oneself as well as the animals. I love the way the animals are loved! Joan R.
I have been involved with the Ranch for almost two years. The training for volunteers is excellent, the care of the animals is outstanding, and the programs offered to children and adults are invaluable.
Volunteering at this ranch is an enriching experience. It provides confidence, leadership and
communication skills. The animals are awesome!! All instructors and lead feeders are skilled and patient, a wonderful place to be. I have never spent time on a ranch or with horses. From my very first training class to the guidance of the experienced horse handlers on my volunteer days, I experienced exceptional professionalism. Imagine a rookie like me, being considered a horse handler! I have learned a lot about horses, and a lot about myself. A volunteer day at this beautiful ranch is a great day. Gene Swedish
My family and I volunteer at The Ranch on the weekends. It is another way that we can enjoy our beautiful state and be a part of an amazing setting and give back to the Center who gives back to animals and people alike. The responsibility and pride that our children have is not something that can be learned in the classroom. Giving of themselves has helped them learn that there are no greater rewards than being appreciated. The mission of The Ranch embodies all of the qualities that we teach our children at home but drives home the need for compassion, kindness and generosity in life. S.B
I just started volunteering with The Ranch this summer. I decided to work with them as a result of a field trip I went on, with a group of high behavioral needs middle school kids. It was shocking, the transformation these students had after meeting and working with the animals. John goes out of it's way to ensure that each child that visits is getting the full experience. I was so impressed, that I wanted to give back to the ranch. Rebecca B
It is nearly one year since I was most fortunate to become a volunteer with this organization. It has been the most amazing experience-- hard work, wonderful friendships, both two legged and four legged kind. Tears, laughter, learning situations, and opportunities to gain more knowledge, and receiving far more than you give. It has been experiences that open you to the world around you and allow you to grow in more ways than you thought. Your contact with nature is inspiring and soothing. The Blue River Ranch is the entire package. This is your chance to experience all things great and small. Mary Sullivan
A year ago, I started volunteering at The Ranch to "give back" to my community. I did not know that I would be on the receiving end of this organization. The knowledge about working with horses, learning about my energy on a conscious level, the friendships I have developed while working, and the peacefulness and uplifting of the heart. The Ranch provides a great opportunity for anyone (young & old) to discover their potential, work through any fears or self doubt, to connect to nature and life and to laugh. I leave the ranch with my jaws sore from smiling and laughing all in a manner of work. I love working at the ranch and I miss it when I am not able to be there. Tim C.
I was blessed to be a photographer invited to take photos of the horses and grounds. Driving up to the ranch, the scenic beauty and good energy just kept getting better. John Longhill spoke to our group about what to expect, and what was expected of us, before we would begin any activities on the ranch. I looked this man in the eye and listened from my heart, as he spoke. John shared what the center was about, and how we should be in touch with our own energy around the horses. I was touched by the kindness, and spiritual awareness of John as I also fully embrace the oneness of life. Later when actually moving around the center and taking photographs I just felt how nourishing the atmosphere of the entire experience was to myself and others. This is a wonderful place serving, and connecting animals and people each with their respective needs to be healed in some way. P.S
I have been involved with many non-profits over the years, but this one has been the most special for me personally. The founders, John and Rose, are extremely compassionate and loving towards the animals they care for, as well as the humans that volunteer! The positive energy that is put forth by everyone involved consumes my spirit when I am there, and the horses exude equally healing energy that is shared among all. The owners, trainers and caretakers knowledge on training and behavior is vast and it is evident that they want to affect not only the lives of the animals they take in, but the community members that take part in learning and caring for the horses as well. The work days offer an opportunity for anyone, any age and walk of life, to experience the essence of unconditional love at the most basic level, as well as a connection with nature at this gorgeous, quintessential Colorado ranch. Joy Van Oss
I volunteer at The Blue River Ranch to learn about horses. Yes, I am receiving incredibly training about horses and yet I keep going back because of so much more. The training techniques include becoming aware of how your demeanor and energy affect the animals. The animal’s behavior provides instant feedback about how we are perceived. The horses definitely are great teachers!! The community attracted to The Ranch is an amazing group of people. The land the ranch encompasses is stunning. The fun and good times I have when I am at The Ranch plus the other things mentioned keep me coming back. The Ranch is truly extraordinary. Janette Mikity
My family has been volunteering at the Blue River Ranch for two years. The experience has been educational for all of us, especially our 8 year old daughter. Our daughter has developed a personal sense of confidence around these large animals and a deep love for them. The animals are rescued from oftentimes sad or tragic situations and placed in healthy environment where they receive loving care. A symbiotic relationship develops between the animals and the people that have that opportunity to learn from them. David Broadway
The Blue River Ranch is a great organization for both the volunteers and the animals. The volunteers are taught how to care for the animals in great detail which results in all of the animals being well taken care of and the volunteers being happy and confident in their skills. I would highly recommend this facility for all humans and animals! Karen Fox
Blue River Horse Sanctuary is wonderful caring place for anyone who loves horses. You can learn how to feed and handle horses with no prior experience. Some of which have either been abandoned or abused. They offer youth and adult leadership programs, riding lessons and trail rides. You can also learn how to desensitize the horses so they can be ridden as well as cues and round pen training. From my experience, all the horses respond exactly as expected from the positive energy directed at them. Gail Nastaszewski
Our children started coming to the Ranch for Saddle Club this past summer; it was amazing to see the positive difference in their energy, self-confidence and focus after each of those days working with and learning about the horses. Continuing to be involved in the Ranch (working with the small animals and the horses) has provided our kids and our whole family with the opportunity to be more aware of the world around us, and to understand how we can create positive outcomes through our thoughts and choices. Jocelyn Mills
The Ranch is a wonderful place where my whole family has enjoyed volunteering and learning about horses and other animals. It has been a great place for my 8 year old daughter, who is a horse lover, to earn her riding lessons and to volunteer her time to help the animals at this ranch. It was important to me for her to learn about giving back to others in a safe and fun environment and this place has been such a blessing for us. We have the highest regard for the owners of this ranch and the senior people in this organization. We just love them and we love the animals there. Holly Broadway
Our organization took our teen girls from Houston to Denver, and one of our activities was at The Ranch for an experience of a lifetime. Some of our girls had never been on a horse. They were able to groom the horses, feed them, and then ride them. Mr. Longhill educated our group before we interacted with them because we learned that not only can interacting with the horses be therapeutic for our girls, but for the horses as well. It was an amazing experience and Mr. Longhill was so kind. Victoria Ochiche
The Blue River Ranch is a rescue for abused and neglected horses, as well as some llamas, sheep and goats, set on a beautiful ranch in the Rocky Mountains. Training sessions for volunteers are run regularly, along with continuing education for both the volunteers and the animals, which keep a focus on safety and respect for the animals' thought processes. The staff are extremely dedicated to providing a caring, nurturing, and healthy environment for the animals, and are truly grateful for the financial donations and hours of volunteer help received. I cannot imagine a more pleasant place to be with these lovely animals. S.D.
I only donate to nonprofits that I can connect to on several levels. This organization helps so many horses and other unwanted animals. The staff is very caring of the animals and they teach children of all ages how to take caring of them as well. I treated my 9 year old neighbor to a day camp. She exercised the smaller animals, fed and groomed the horses and then had a riding lesson before the day's end. Her comment, "I no longer want to be a singer when I grow up, I want to be a cowgirl!" I realize it must cost a lot of money to take care of just one horse and their herd is at least 15 or more, plus the goats, llamas, sheep, donkeys and ponies. I can my time, any thing I can afford and donate items to their thrift store.
Please look at their website and if so moved, give as much as you can, they will thank you for it. Patty Blank
Volunteering with The Blue River Ranch not only provided me with a fulfilling way to spend my summer, but taught me valuable lessons about myself and how to see myself reflected in the animals that we work with. I also had the opportunity to work with outstanding people and meet some of my first friends in Summit County! Ellen Harvey
The Torch Club, of the Boys & Girls Cub of South Park in Fairplay, CO had a fantastic experience with the Ranch during the summer of 2012. The Torch Club is a leadership program focusing on enriching their lives and the lives of others through service, leadership and by demonstrating good character. We were participating with the Ranch for our National Project "PAWS", Protecting Animals With Service. We worked with the horses along with the learning the Ranch Management Program. This program is a perfect opportunity for a worthwhile cause, along with achieving personal growth. I know that our group had a life-changing experience with participating with the awesome staff and other volunteers we worked with. I don't know who received the most benefit, us, or the horses?! Emily March
The atmosphere of the Blue River Ranch is professional, organized and so much fun! It is obvious from the minute you set foot on the ground that you are touching into something special, with people and animals dedicating themselves to help others grow in awareness of their lives. It's wonderful to be around such loving energy! Val Altoff
My husband and I went through a thorough and enjoyable volunteer training program at The Ranch. The trainers were patient, friendly, knowledgeable and fun. The goats, sheep, donkeys and horses are treated with the utmost care and love. The programs they have at The Ranch are spot on for educating children and adults and for leadership training. The Ranch is inspirational for horse and animal lovers who are able to help with the care of the many rescued animals. The ranch setting is in a beautiful valley where the animals are safe. Leslie Fishman
I love The Blue River Ranch because of the wonderful programs it has to offer to youth and our community. The best part is the volunteer trainings and one-on-one work with the animals. Every time I leave the ranch, I feel completely energized and ready to save the world. The animals are cared for and happy which makes the The Ranch's story that more amazing and personal. Jennifer T.
The Blue River Ranch is an exceptional non-profit benefitting the animals that are rescued and the people who come to work with the animals. I am a very happy volunteer who has worked with a number of animal rescue organizations. The Blue River Ranch is one of the best I have encountered. The people that run the organization, the volunteers, the medical personnel, all folks involved in the organization are very professional and work well together. The systems in place to ensure that the animals receive all the proper care they need. Often when I arrive to volunteer, young people are there from many organizations helping out. I cannot recommend this organization highly enough. Barry Gray
I love the Blue River Ranch and volunteering there. The Ranch is located in a beautiful river valley with great views and is so serene. Just driving down the entrance road leaves my daily cares behind. I also totally enjoy working with the animals at the Ranch. Despite their previous hardships, each animal has its on unique character and personality and it is so fun to get to know them. Working with horses who outweigh me by almost a thousand pounds has definitely increased my confidence and focus, showing me it's never too late to learn! Rhonda Pederson
I have been volunteering at The Ranch for five years. It is a beautiful setting and each week I look forward to going out and helping with all the animals. They have several leadership programs that benefit youth and adults. Helping them learn about the animals and at the same time learning about themselves. It provides them a real sense of accomplishment and pride and also returns a great amount of love to the animals. I would like to see this organization grow and get more funding so that it could help more children in the Summit County area. Jean Lawson
Working with the animals (particularly the horses) at The Ranch has been extremely rewarding to me for a variety of reasons: 1) There's the usual good feeling about oneself that comes with helping those in need (in this case the animals as well as the The Ranch itself). 2) As a person who always admired horses but knew nothing about them, the ability to work them and get to know them "up close and
personal" has been thrilling and has given me a new-found appreciation of their intelligence and separate personalities. 3) Working with the horses effectively requires one to be a bit assertive and show them who's boss. That's helped me overall to be more comfortable in my dealings not only with the horses but with people as well. 4) As a "senior" volunteer, it has helped me to stay engaged in the community as well as to feel both intellectually and physically stimulated. While by no means overwhelming, it is "work" to work at the ranch and it's helping to keep me feeling young and fit. 5) Finally, it gives me a feeling of the "old West" being involved in an actual working horse ranch, putting on boots and digging into the tasks of feeding the animals and keeping the ranch up to snuff. As a parent, I don't believe in role models - role models are just humans and if you put them on a pedestal, they fall. But - I do love it when I've found a person or a group of people who inspire my child to make him see that he can be better and strive for better, and this is what The Blue River Ranch, and The Longhills do. Since we've started volunteering, my son understands what it means to be a leader, a friend, a helper and to show respect differently than if I could talk to him and teach him - it's because when he's at the center and around Rose and John, he sees it with his own eyes. The effect this has on him has changed him from the kid who gets negative attention in school, to the one who gets positive attention. The horses and the other animals inspire him as well (all of us actually). My son has learned about responsibility by taking care of the animals and although we practice this at home, it's different at the ranch...my son gets back just as much as gives to the animals and this makes all the difference in the world. Thank you to John and Rose and all the people who lead and volunteer for doing what you do.
Everything we learn and practice at SCO is real life stuff, it helps us all be better. I can't imagine our lives without it! Andrea Leskovar
'Look through the gate, not at the gate' when you are leading a horse, and this is a metaphor for any obstacle life presents. John, when talking about an unruly horse, says, 'He's just a horse being a horse.' This statement is such useful and profound way of looking at people, too. At the Ranch I have learned how to walk with purpose, how to focus my energy, and to use intuition to understand myself, and others. Not to mention all that I have learned about communicating with horses and other animals. There is a lot of satisfying hard work to do on the ranch. Nothing makes you feel more alive in our screen-filled technological world than wrestling bales of hay to put out for a herd of grateful hungry horses on a day when it's 20 below zero and the wind is picking up. Suzanne Welles
Like most little girls, our daughter had been begging us for a horse for years. Unfortunately, we did not have the knowledge, time, space or financial means to own our own horse. When we heard about the Ranch, we immediately signed up for volunteer training, in order to support our 8 year old. Turns out, I was captivated by the information we gained the first day. Since then, our family experience at the Ranch has been life changing. My husband and I did not grow up around horses, and I have been somewhat fearful of them. Now, I am amazed at how comfortable I have become with the horses, and how much I enjoy working with them, as well as learning their names and individual personalities.
The biggest benefit has been for our daughter. She is passionate about the Ranch, and if she could, she'd be out there everyday. She has become very confident with the horses and other animals, and she finds solace in their presence. For her, the horses provide non-judgemental listening, unconditional love, and as she's expressed, “a mirror for her emotions”. She's looking forward to starting with the Saddle Club in the spring. One of the greatest gifts the Ranch provides is the opportunity to convene with nature in a spectacular, cell-free setting. We are grateful for the opportunity John has provided, and feel very fortunate to live in a community that supports an organization such as the Ranch. Kim Nearpass
I learned about the Ranch through my 9-year old daughter - who was referred there through another volunteer. Thanks, Doreen! Never before was I interested in horses. Now I'm headed to the trainings to become a volunteer myself, and we decided to sponsor a horse as a family! Just being there a few times to help my daughter and the horses and the center has shown me that it is about MUCH MORE than "horse time". It's about awareness, non-verbal communication, leadership, teamwork - and a community of people and animals I'm thrilled to have my daughter growing up with. ~Dr. Justin Pollack
The Ranch has been fantastic! I have learned so much about patience and learning to be more of a leader in life! I am so grateful this opportunity to grow was given to me! So grateful for the Blue River Ranch in my life! :) Cindi Villard
I think that people are looking for different outcomes or benefits when it comes to volunteering. The Blue River Ranch provides many opportunities for all of its volunteers. To me, volunteering at the Ranch allows me to help out an organization with necessary tasks that must be done everyday, and in turn, I am encouraged as a person. I feel like a useful and integral part of the organization each time I am out there. Jesse Wright
The Ranch has given me a sense of focus again in my life. When I graduated from grad school I had more questions about life and its meaning than I had when I started my program. I've been searching and searching for a way to serve my community in a way I truly believe in and the Ranch has given me that opportunity. Giving people the opportunity to care for these special animals and then giving animals the opportunity to reciprocate by being mirrors to our souls is an exchange that is priceless. This is a top rate organization, it approaches the core of so many social problems, ourselves. Miriam Chadwell
The Ranch has forever changed my life in so many positive ways. It has connected me to a community of people who believe in showing kindness and compassion to every human being regardless of their challenges; and being here on the ranch has taught me how to live a happier life through connections with animals and people. My relationship with the horses constantly makes me aware of myself in ways I never knew and they are always showing me new ways that I can improve. The Ranch has restored my faith that people are good and kind and it's been a place where I have made many new friendships with both people and animals. Kelly West
I am currently in a horse training clinic taught by John. They have a comfortable, calm training style where they demonstrate a skill and then you get to practice with your own assigned horse. The training has gone well, and I recently realized that I was trying to fix a problem, but the issue was a step before my perceived issue. It is like a math problem, if you make an error in an early calculation it affects the outcome later so until you go back to correct that first slip up, you will not attain the result for which you are reaching. Each trip to the ranch is a learning experience for me. I love building a relationship with the horses and the comraderie with the other volunteers. Lyn Margolies
When I moved to Colorado three years ago I was looking forward to retirement and finding new activities and community involvement. While reading the local paper I noticed an article about The Blue River Ranch. The picture of Shoshoni, a severely abused pinto mare, caught my eye and I knew then what my new volunteer commitment would be. Since I began volunteering at The Ranch two years ago I have discovered many things about myself in learning to care for these wonderful animals. Just driving to the Ranch and taking in the beautiful surroundings and the loving trust of the animals at The Ranch makes my day! I have always loved horses and being around horses but as I got older I was less confident in myself, and my ability. I have learned a lot from Rose and John and the Leadership classes at The Ranch. It has changed the way I view my life and my relationships and has given me a rewarding and enriching experience that I would not have thought possible at this time in my life. The Ranch provides many outreach programs that have benefited both adults and children. I love working with the children in the outreach programs. Working with children and mentoring has been an important part of my adult life. Seeing the joy and sense of accomplishment that a child receives in learning a new skill or new awareness brings is very rewarding.
The Ranch’s statement “Horses as Teachers, Healers and Friends” says it best. Jean Lawson
My name is Pam Horstman, and I am a volunteer and supporter of The Blue River Ranch. I personally got involved with their program in the summer of 2011. Seeing the horses and reading about their stories made such an impression on me!! I loved the programs and the way they interact with the many horses they have adopted!! It made such an impression on me that I came back to Texas and started rescuing horses myself!! Reclamation Horse Haven has 7 horses and 3 horses came from Colorado, they were headed to slaughter!! Pam Horstman
My experiences at the ranch, has shown me a side to horses that I had never fully seen before. The animals that I work with are more complex creatures than we all first suspect when first volunteering. As a volunteer I am able to work with horses that each have a personality of their own, and connect to the animals in such a way that they begin to grow on me. These programs continue to help horses in need and, through outstanding programs, teach children about these great animals and allow them to interact with them at a level that every child appreciates. Christopher H.
After a grueling 4 years of working full time and going to school, after graduation I decided to do something that got me out of my rut of work, school, and schoolwork. I started volunteering at The Ranch hoping it would help me to learn more about horses. Not only have I learned more about horses, but the horses have helped me learn more about myself. The Ranch does such a great job of caring for their animals, and at the same time also provide excellent opportunities for local children to learn about responsibility, communication all while having fun! Thanks The Ranch! L.L
My experience at the Ranch has been extremely full filling. I get to spend quality time with my daughter, learning, teaching, and just talking while we are out volunteering. It is so fun to see her interact with the animals and grow as a person. She has gained responsibility and improved on her communication skills. Blue River Horse Sanctuary is a great place to "pay it forward" and give back. S.H
Well organized and meaningful! Fine fine people! This group utilizes volunteers in a very positive way and very efficiently! Margo Hirsh
Last summer I signed up for The Blue River Ranch to help the horses. They ended up helping me more. I benefit from the hard ranch work and the camaraderie of fellow volunteers who are compassionate and strong in heart and soul. The horses are healthy and love their herd. They are fed individualized diets, designed for optimal fitness. They have regular check-ups, including dental. Their well-being and happiness is top priority. Linda F.
My children & I began volunteering at the Ranch summer of 2011. From day one we were welcomed with open arms, even though we had no experience being around horses. Everyone was friendly and we learned a lot. It was great to be at the Ranch because there were people of all ages sand abilities, each of us were able to use our talents to help. My son is a big strong kid so he could help with some of the tougher ranch jobs while my daughter is good with a needle & was put to task of labeling blankets. I wish there was more time in the week so we could continue to volunteer, we are looking forward to summer and a break from school to get back out with friends & horses & llamas& alpacas...oh my. Maureen Flanagan
I have been volunteering at The Ranch for over a year, and look forward to my day once a week where I can help with the care of 35 previously abused and neglected horses and other animals. I also enjoy participating in the wonderful training classes The Blue River Ranch offers, both about horse care, as well as those to help us live more fulfilling lives. This non-profit has some big hearts heading it and has touched the lives of many, humans and hooved alike. Kendra Hall
I first went to the ranch because I was drawn to the amazing work they are doing with saving , rehabilitating and loving beautiful horses but also because they use the animal - human connection to show that both parties can be rehabilitated by love and respect. What John and the others do is phenomenal and every time I go out to feed or help I am taken back by the beauty of the atmosphere, the horses and the project. They deserve huge recognition and applause for what they do................................................................................................................................... I love them! Stacey Brooks Connolly
The animals at the rescue need "love"... "spiritual food" that I have been blessed to impart on them. Sure,
putting out all the feed and supplements in the respective feed containers and leading each animal to their feeding station is my "job", but the real privilege is "caring" for them in a way they were not accustom to before coming to the rescue. The best part is that "they" give back 10 times what I give to them, they renew my soul, my spirit with their genuine appreciation of my time spent with each and every one of them. The organization is run by responsible, appreciative people. Trainings are thorough !! Equipment needed is available. Not to mention the beautiful setting to "work" - fabulous !!!!!
Thanks for this great opportunity, Geri Chmiel
Shortly after becoming a horse owner, I learned of The Ranch's educational programs and decided to try one of the courses. I soon realized that training a horse was really about my own training in the art of communication. The Ranch offers several programs that rather than being just about animal care and safe training, translate into how we can become clear about our goals and our lives. When working with horses, it doesn't take long to let go of a behavior that is counter-productive. We are fortunate to have this organization creating a learning environment at no cost to those interested. Janet Elich
This is a fantastic charity which helps people learn to connect with animals- mainly rescue horses but also alpacas, sheep, llamas, and more- and learn more about yourself in the process. Each animal's unique personality and background adds to the amazing experience of learning through animals as "healers, helpers, and friends" and helping the animals in return by giving them a better life than what most of them came from. Truly a wonderful charity and fun place to volunteer and be involved. Sofya Fedynska
The Ranch is a sanctuary for horses and people. It is situated on a beautiful ranch under the shadow of the Gore mountain range. The rescued horses are an inspiration and it is a privilege to work with them. The best thing about the ranch is that they welcome all those who want to help in any way - regardless of horse experience. They have taught me the real meaning of a hard day's work and how rewarding it is to work with their wonderful horses who have all overcome impossible odds. I have learned so much about horses and myself and feel blessed to be a part of the The Ranch community. The effort put forth by everyone involved in the ranch keeps me grounded and reminds me what is really important in life.
